My purpose here is to provide introductory insight into how learning public speaking can equip ANYONE with the required interest, who is willing to take need action, with the ability to confidently address any individual or group audience in a manner that influences them to agree with his/her line of thinking or do what s/he wants.

No one is born with courage and self-confidence. You develop it. And that happens through practice. Every time you expose yourself to that situation that scares you, and you make conscious effort to over come that fear, and function normally, you WILL improve. Sooner than later, you'll wonder why it was ever a problem for you.

True Story Of A Business Owner Lacking Courage & Self-Confidence Needed To Approach High Profile Customers

Early this month, a young man who called himself Sam called me on my mobile line, introducing himself as a startup Catfish Farm Business Owner. He explained that he got my phone number from an article I wrote on my Cost-Saving Farm Biz Support website titled Producing Good Catfish Is Important, But Finding Good Buyers Is Imperative!

He then explained that he had attended a seminar on catfish farming and commenced production a few months earlier. Then he stumbled on my article while browsing the net and realised that the point I'd made about failing to find buyer AHEAD of time, for the impending harvest was relevant to him.

In that article I pointed out that most farm business owners out here tend to focus more on producing, sparing little or no thought for how they would sell off their produce when the time comes. And this often puts them in a position of weakness and desperation once their livestock or produce are ready for market, and buyers fail to come or if when they do, they do not offer good prices.

I shared insights based on work I had done with Hotels, Restaurants & Bars, who routinely have to make bulk purchase of live catfish for use in preparing various dishes for their customers. Smart farm owners need only approach the owners of such outfits and make an attractive offer requiring assurance of bulk purchase of their soon to be ready catfish.

An arrangement of this kind with the right number of bulk buyers would ensure more profitable and timely sell-off of catfish, minimising losses, and improving ponds turnaround times.

He Opens Up: Knowing that I had literally spilled my guts in that article, offering 3 different ideas based on tested and proven strategies I was aware of, I told the guy who called me, that I did not understand why he still needed my help.

That was when he told me he found it difficult to imagine himself going into a hotel without knowing anyone, and making such an offer, adding "How can I just walk into the place and ask for the owner, just like that?"

Then it struck me that he lacked the courage and self-confidence to do what I had suggested!

And then I recalled that other farm owners I had told the same thing often asked me to do it for them, so they could share the proceeds with me. I would counter by telling them I would struggle to add that to my schedule, and that they would be better off LEARNING to do it themselves. Few were convinced though.

So, this young man's conversation with me opened my eyes to the realisation that many such business owners NEED to learn Public Speaking to equip themselves to do the necessary sales and marketing for their businesses effectively.

Lack of Courage & Self-Confidence : It's NOT Just Business Owners Who Have This Problem

But it's not just business owners that need to LEARN public speaking. Career persons in paid employment also need this essential skill, if they are to actualise their full potentials.

Some adults are scared - terrified even - of having to do anything that exposes them to being observed by others, or worse, having to influence them. At work, they avoid being in the spotlight, even when their achievements cause others to request they play more visible roles or participate in public functions and events.

You probably know of at least one person, who is exceptionally competent in their chosen vocations, but who would do anything to avoid being in the spotlight. And when forced to be there, their discomfort would be obvious to onlookers.

You may have heard the anecdote about a manager, company executive who when called upon to give an impromptu address at a formal event, either passed, or stood up and failed to pass across any meaningful message, due to nervousness.

In society, such people may try to blend into the crowd, so as not to get noticed. When conflicts occur, they rarely step up to try and help resolve differences between parties that are aggrieved.

The truth is that often in life, situations occur that require someone to take what I call an "informal leadership role", by speaking out and acting in ways that will influence all concerned to do what s/he proposes.

I have in the past found myself playing such involuntary leadership roles, because I could not bear to see someone or some persons get cheated or intimidated.

Believe it or not, many times it was my ability to express myself articulately, using convincing arguments, that made the aggrieved parties listen to me, until they arrived at amicable settlements - thanking me in the end for my intervention.

Learn Public Speaking & Gain Self-Confidence, PLUS The Ability To Make People Do What You Want

Your ability to speak articulately, and convincingly will frequently confer informal opinion leadership status on you wherever you happen to engage in conversation with others.

When I say Public Speaking, I refer to situations in which you speak to individuals and/or groups of people. Developing the ability to express yourself in a manner that commands the attention, interest, and agreement of your listeners is a skill of enormous value.

You will do yourself a world of good by DEVELOPING this latent ability.

To Which Of These Groups Do You Belong?

a). Business Owners: It is instructive to note that selling and marketing is about getting people to do what you want.

In other words, you want to INFLUENCE them, to do business with you. 9 times out of 10, that process will involve SPEAKING to them. If you learn Public Speaking, your chances of winning more customers over, will dramatically increase. Why? Because you will be MORE convincing when you speak.

If yours is a large company, you may have to address employees, their unions or even your shareholders. Learning public speaking will make you more effective. And your company's performance would reflect it.

b). Career Persons: Getting ahead in the work place is about delivering results on your job. Quite often, especially in lower and middle level management, your technical competence will see you through, or speak for you.

But then even at that level, if you manage teams, or large workforces, your skill in public speaking can help you avert trade union problems, even if you are not an HR person. A good speaker, can get people to listen to him/her and convince them to see reason.

To get higher into senior management, your SOFT SKILLS come into play. Your ability to communicate effectively may determine how well you perform, because at this level, you will have to address other senior executives, on various issues, sometimes with a view to influencing them to see things your way. If you lack effective public speaking skills, you may short change yourself!

c). Aspiring Speakers: Maybe you are an expert in your field and would like to get paid to speak about what you know. Learning Public Speaking would be a great way to get started.

So, How Do You Learn Public Speaking?

I suggest:

1. Get and read Dale Carnegie's Book: It's titled "How To Develop Confidence & Influence People By Public Speaking". It's a little book, but filled with very practical ideas and experience based wisdom.

Read the True Story By Daniel M. Wood at his blog about how Dale Carnegie's book helped him when he was learning to speak in front of crowds, and why he still keeps it in his back pocket just in case...".

Dale Carnegie wrote in 1926 the book “How to Develop Self-Confidence and Influence People by Public Speaking” about the subject where he shares many great tips on how to become a better speaker.

It was my companion when I was learning to speak in front of crowds and is still in my back pocket just in case.

10 years ago speaking in front of a crowd was almost the most frightening thing you could ask me to do. I was terrified.
