Background

Facebook marketing works. I use it, and have repeatedly achieved financially rewarding returns from doing so - without placing ONE single ad. All I do is intelligently propagate my stuff in ways that over time enhance my credibility until those who fit my target audience profile are influenced to get in touch with me. It works - if you know how.

I recently (mid-August) got an SMS from a young man I've been trying to (subtly) "influence" - using periodic suggestions - to help him find better ways to actualise his potential, after I studied his posts on Facebook.

Here's what he wrote: "Hello, this is <name removed>. So, how can one get paying public speaking platforms here in Lagos?"

THAT unsolicited enquiry from him did not come as a surprise, because I'd periodically referred him to related online resources in making my "suggestions".

But it is instructive to note that before then he and I had never communicated outside the Facebook medium. Note also that he must have gone out of his way to find my phone number himself (possibly from my profile or website) - because I did not give it to him.

So you see ( and I am sure you will agree) that I have made reasonable progress towards my goal of "influencing him using subtlety"...via the Facebook medium. We need to do that more often - and LESS of direct marketing that so many do, bombarding their target audiences with "buy this and buy that" messages. Make your messages welcome, by working hard to get perceived as a credible (potential) "source of increase".


The Message

Here are excerpts from the answer I sent to him via the Facebook messaging interface on August 25, 2011:

By the way, I hope you found some useful ideas in the references to Burt Dubin's website ( http://www.speakingsuccess.com ) that I provided. Believe me when I tell you that right from 2002, I successfully applied ideas from that same website (and his newsletter and e-course) to get myself invited to speak. 

Burt recommends you start that way - make yourself worthy of getting invited - follow the instructions in his articles etc. Then, as time goes on, your outings will draw attention to you - if you follow Burt's lead, you WILL have successful outings. 

Eventually, some people will call to meet/discuss with you, and will find it hard to ask you to speak for FREE. They will ask, so how much do you charge for an appearance? That's exactly what the Training Manager of Centre for Management Development (CMD) asked me. 

I'll never forget the day they came in their official car to our house in Gbagada, to (invite me to) speak (to their members). 6 months before, I had sent a copy of a research paper I had written titled "Self-Development As A Tool For Achieving Career Advancement" to over 50 different organisations, including CMD, Lagos Business School etc. 

That (i.e. publishing a unique report or paper) is one good way to cement your credibility/expertise in the minds of decision makers you want to notice you, and possibly invite you. Later at the (CMD) premises, we negotiated my fees, and I was told they only pay honorariums, and that there was some prestige associated with being able to say one had spoken at the Centre for Management Development. 

So, we agreed and I gave my talk to a hall packed with Directors and Staff of CMD, and came away with rave testimonials (on my feedback forms -over 100 of them). I recall subsequently getting invited to speak (also for 1 hour) to 14 management trainees at Tantalisers HQ, by a consultant who knew of the appearance I made at CMD.

There's another strategy = No Fee Talks. You offer to speak for NO PROFESSIONAL FEE, so long as space is provided for you to display your own products for sale - this is called back room sales. I used this to great effect when I approached Adrao International Schools (I spoke ONLY to adults - administrative and teaching staff) - many attendees ordered copies of my books, reports etc - see http://www.tksola.com/ (scroll to the bottom). 

That means, you will have written stuff you know people who hear you speak will want to buy. Then go there with sample copies. I advise you avoid producing too many copies ahead of the event, because you may not know which one will interest them. Let them see sample copies, place order by making deposits, then when you deliver, you get your balance (from the admin office for instance). For the Nigerian/Lagos environment, my experiences suggest this is a "safe" way to proceed.

A few points to note:

1). I must emphasize that I use now public speaking to primarily market my products and services. That means I do not speaking DIRECTLY about what I do or sell. 

Instead I offer useful information and education, that my audience can put to immediate use, without needing me. On their own, after I'm done, some will conclude in their minds that they would like me to help them do it. It's a powerful zero cost marketing technique used world wide.
